Towards Generating 3D Hiking Route Maps
نویسنده
چکیده
We describe the initial efforts towards developing a system for automatically generating oblique 3D overviews of hiking trails. Given a GPS path, the system is intended to automatically return a printable map with an appropriately chosen viewpoint and vertical distortion. We discuss general design implications for 3D maps and map-related representations, address specific applications to this task, and provide an overview of our initial prototype. Future work, including thoughts on potential methods of evaluating our system in particular and the efficacy of 3D oblique maps for general navigation in mountainous terrain.

Extending the OGC OpenLS Route Service to 3D for an interoperable realisation of 3D focus maps with landmarks
Landmarks and focus maps can play an important role by supporting users in route finding and navigation. This article shows one possible solution for generating focus-based maps with landmarks by only using OGC web service standards. The aim is to increase technical interoperability of implementation of location-based services or navigation applications. The techniques for choosing specific lan...
متن کامل3D Maps in Mobile Devices: Pathway Analysis for Interactive Navigation Aid
Pathway analysis provided by current 3D maps in mobile devices that are intended for an interactive navigation aid, is simulated for what-if experiments against task and functional analysis, based on the problems faced from both technical and user-practices views. The aim of a navigation aid, in general, is to provide an optimal route from the current position to the destination. Unfortunately,...
متن کاملModel-driven Content Management for Web-based 3d Geoinformation Services
Today we are witnessing an increasing number of interactive 3d maps and of web-based 3d geoinformation and entertainment services covering entire regions or countries. One of the major challenges in making such interactive 3d services a lasting success is the cartographic content. In the future this content needs to be up-to-date, relevant and increasingly personalised. There is also a trend to...

Th is paper discusses the fi ndings of a comparative user study conducted in Zion National Park, Utah, in September 2006, which tested conventional (2D) and perspective (3D) trail maps in an outdoor setting. Th e study aimed to answer questions about the eff ectiveness of both map types for communicating cartographic information, whether hikers are attracted to one map type over the other, and ...
متن کاملTowards Autonomous 3D Mapping in Urban Environments
This paper describes work-in-progress aimed at generating dense 3D maps of urban environments using laser range data acquired from a moving platform. These maps display both fine-scale detail (resolving features only a few centimeters across) and large-scale consistency (typical maps are approximately 0.5 km on a side). In this paper, we sketch a basic 3D mapping algorithm (paying particular at...
